A disc golf course is being proposed for Centennial Park.

Centennial Park could soon be home to Mission's first disc golf course.

Mission residents Mark Klassen, Gregory Beck, and Brad Henderson, president of the Fraser Valley Disc Golf Club, spoke to council about building a course for one of North America's fastest growing sports.

There are more than 30,000 courses in North America; there are 50 in B.C., most of which were installed by municipalities as a recreational facility, explained Klassen.

Henderson has helped build numerous courses and organized tournaments. The closest course to Mission, he says, is on Thornhill in Maple Ridge.

Disc golf is similar to golf, but with modified frisbees, explained Beck, who brought a driver to show council. There are also putters and mid-range ones. "It's a really fun sport."

Disc golf is also more accessible and less expensive than golf.

"It can be picked up by anyone of any age," said Klassen. "You don't have to book a tee time."

The group is proposing a nine-hole course. Players can show up at the park to play at any time.

"The club will put in the effort to maintain the course and tidy it up," said Klassen, who has already met with the district's parks and recreation department.

Council has asked staff to prepared report on the topic.
