Officials uncertain what was seen falling from the sky near Chilliwack Tuesday

Nav Canada not reporting any missing aircraft, RCMP Air 1 found no debris in Mt. Cheam area

Officials are unclear what was seen falling from the sky near Mt. Cheam around sunset on Tuesday, but it now seems unlikely it was a plane crash.

Just before 6 p.m., Chilliwack RCMP said they received reports of an object falling from the sky trailed by a smoke plume.

More than one photo was posted on social media that showed something like what was reported.

The RCMP’s Air 1 helicopter conducted aerial searches of the area above Bridal Falls, and a Buffalo aircraft from CFB Comox was also dispatched to the area. Neither aircraft found any wreckage of plane debris in the area on Tuesday.

Emergency crews and Mounties were on the ground in the Bridal Falls area Tuesday evening speaking to ATV users in the area.

“None of the individuals who were in the Mt. Cheam area reported seeing or hearing anything unusual,” Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Krista Vrolyk said Wednesday morning.

All the reports to police were from outside the area, from a distance.

Vrolyk said talking to Nav Canada, the corporation that operates civil air navigation systems in Canada, they do not have any missing aircraft to report. She said police were also consulting with Environment Canada to see if it’s possible there was some sort of meteor or something from space that was seen.

“We cannot say what we saw falling from the sky,” Vrolyk said. “Air 1 didn’t see any plane debris.”
