Council has addressed night hauling on Lower Sumas Mountain Road, from the four quarries on the gravel truck route.
“It worked fairly well last year, and we did not get any complaints,” noted manager of engineering Jim Gordon, adding that the quarries on top of the mountain will not be used at night.
Council gave him the authority to approve night hauling requests. This was done because in the past council approval was required, could take two or three weeks, and Sumas Mountain aggregate producers were not able to respond to Ministry of Transportation requests for night hauling in a timely manner. They lost business opportunities created by the Gateway Project.
