A Toronto author has written a book about the infamous Bacon brothers, formerly of Abbotsford.

The Notorious Bacon Brothers: Inside Gang Warfare on Vancouver Streets is written by bestselling author Jerry Langton (in photo), an editor for The Toronto Star.

The book follows the rise of the three gangland figures – Jonathan, Jarrod and Jamie – to the pinnacle of Vancouver's lucrative drug trade, as well as the preceding events that allowed them to gain power.

Langton chronicles not just the Bacon brothers themselves, but the gangs they infiltrated on their way to the top, the catastrophic wave of violence they brought to the streets of Vancouver, and their chilling legacy, as their adeptness at making and breaking allegiances and propensity for violence is now being replicated by gangs across Canada.

Fearless and known for levels of violence that had the police warning not just the public, but other criminals, to stay away from them, they planned and carried out the massacre at a Surrey apartment building that took the lives of four rival gang members and two innocent bystanders in 2007, Langton says.

With the eldest Bacon brother, Jonathan, dead – murdered by gunfire in August 2011 in Kelowna – and the other two placed behind bars in 2012, a power vacuum has developed for control of the drug trade in the Greater Vancouver area.

The result has been full-on war between the Hells Angels, Red Scorpions, UN Gang and Independent Soldiers, as they fight to take the position once occupied by the Bacon brothers, according to Langton.

Langton is the author of the bestsellers Gangland: The Rise of the Mexican Cartels from El Paso to Vancouver; Showdown: How the Outlaws, Hells Angels and Cops Fought for Control of the Streets; and Fallen Angel: The Unlikely Rise of Walter Stadnick in the Canadian Hells Angels.

The Notorious Bacon Brothers is now available in bookstores.
