An Abbotsford mother and son have been honoured for their efforts in capturing a thief last September.

Matteo Rossit-Lavigne and Angelina Rossit received a commendation from the Abbotsford Police Board on Tuesday for the incident on Sept. 24.

At about 1 a.m. that day, Matteo heard noises coming from a pickup truck parked in the driveway below his bedroom window.

He looked out the window and saw a man rummaging through the inside of the vehicle.

Matteo yelled at the thief, then quickly dressed and alerted his mom. The pair ran outside and yelled at the man, who fled from the vehicle.

As Angelina called 911, Matteo chased the suspect and caught up to him. The pair struggled, and Matteo brought him to the front lawn of the home, where he restrained him until police arrived.

The man was arrested and is now before the courts on several charges.

Mayor Bruce Banman, in presenting the pair with their police commendation, said they were being recognized for their "courage, initiative and willingness to assist the police."

"Your keen observations, clear thinking and quick responses proved to be invaluable in allowing the police members to arrest the thief," he said.
