A missing snowmobiler from Abbotsford was found safe early this morning (Monday) after spending the night outdoors in the Coquihalla area north of Hope.

The 28-year-old had became separated from two friends he was snowmobiling with yesterday. The two called 911 at about 7:30 p.m. after they failed in their attempts to locate him.

Hope RCMP and Hope Search and Rescue opted not to send out a ground crew, due to the avalanche risk, and decided to search by helicopter and then a Buffalo airplane.

During the search, they dropped flares, which the man, using his cellphone, confirmed seeing.

At first light this morning, Chilliwack, Hope and Kent-Harrison search and rescue crews began a ground search, and located the snowmobiler. RCMP Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop said the man was assessed at the scene. He was cold and wet, but did not require hospitalization.
