Abbotsford experienced a minor earthquake after midnight this morning (Sunday).

The U.S. Geological Survey confirms a 3.3-magnitude tremor occurred about seven kilometres east-southeast of the city at 12:45 a.m., at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

Abbotsford is situated near a shallow fault line that runs east of Bellingham north across the border, making minor quakes quite common, with the potential of a major shaker in the range of 6 or 7-magnitude always looming. A quake of that size can cause considerable damage.

Local residents are reporting on social media that they felt a loud bang, vibration and rumbling in this morning's incident.

Emergency services are not reporting any damage in the community.
