Mike de Jong lists financial backers of his campaign

Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong has released a list of donors who have contributed to his campaign for the Liberal leadership.

Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong has released a list of donors who have contributed to his campaign for the Liberal leadership.

So far, 181 individuals and organizations have donated $266,450. The full list is on de Jong’s campaign website www.mikedejong.com.

“I believe in openness for government and for those who seek public office,” said de Jong in a press release. “Taxpayers should know how their dollars are being spent, and they should know where their politicians are getting the funds to run their campaigns.”

The two largest donors at $10,000 each are A&A Trading Ltd. of Vancouver, which is a Vancouver-based distributor and exporter of lumber and wood products, and the Powell River-based Qathen Xwegus Management Corporation, which works to develop economic independence for the Klahoose First Nation.

Locally, some recognizable donors include the Conair Group and Bobcat Country, which both donated $5,800 to the de Jong campaign. Telus Corporation also donated $5,000.

“Earning the public’s trust will only happen if politicians are prepared to trust the public with basic information about campaign finances in a timely way,” said de Jong. “On the first day of my leadership campaign, I promised to be open and transparent about my campaign finances and today I am fulfilling that promise.”

Some 90,000 Liberal members will select a new leader for the party, and the next premier, in a ballot on Feb. 26.
