Metro Vancouver joined the city of Abbotsford in opposing a new rock quarry spanning 310 acres on Sumas Mountain.
Metro parks committee chair Gayle Martin said Metro and the Fraser Valley Regional District are considering Sumas Mountain for a future inter-regional park – building on the FVRD’s existing Sumas Mountain Regional Park – and the planned quarry would be a poor fit.
She said it would hurt plans to create more parkland with an extensive network of trails.
“The whole of Sumas Mountain is a wonderful asset for the Lower Mainland,” she said. “Would you like a rock quarry in the middle of Stanley Park?”
