A man whose pickup truck smashed head-on into a vehicle occupied by a couple in their 70s on Friday evening in Abbotsford is being investigated for impaired driving.
The crash took place on Fraser Highway and Stevens Street – just west of Mt. Lehman Road – at about 7:30 p.m.
Const. Ian MacDonald said Abbotsford Police received a call at 7:22 p.m. from a motorist who observed a Dodge pickup being driven erratically westbound in the area of Maclure and Townline roads.
The caller stayed on the line with a 911 operator as she followed the driver, who proceeded onto Fraser Highway.
Shortly after, the truck crossed the centre line and smashed head-on into a Toyota Rav4, MacDonald said.
The Abbotsford couple in the Toyota were taken to hospital with suspected fractures and internal injuries.
MacDonald said the 54-year-old Langley man driving the pickup was also taken to hospital, but with less-serious injuries.
The crash closed down Fraser Highway from Mt. Lehman to Ross Road for about four hours, as the vehicles were cleared and investigators remained on the scene.
MacDonald said police are awaiting the results of blood samples taken from the pickup driver before determining what charges will be laid.
