Matthew Roy has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in relation to a stabbing that took place March 6, 2022 in Abbotsford.

An Abbotsford man has pleaded guilty in relation to a stabbing that occurred earlier this year.

Matthew Roy, 32, issued his plea Wednesday (Dec. 15) in Abbotsford provincial court on a charge of aggravated assault. His sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 17.

Roy had been scheduled to go to trial on the matter on Jan. 16.

The incident took place March 6 in the 1600 block of Riverside Road. Roy had stabbed a 29-year-old man, who was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

At the time, Roy was identified as the suspect, but was not on scene. He was located and arrested on March 16.

Roy has also pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with a weapon from Jan. 29, 2020 and a robbery on Dec. 13, 2021 – both in Abbotsford – that will also be addressed at his sentencing hearing on Jan. 17.

Roy was previously convicted of aggravated assault for another stabbing that took place July 13, 2020 in the same area of Abbotsford.

The victim in that case, a 34-year-old man, was stabbed in his upper body, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police issued a press release on July 17, 2020, saying they were looking for Roy. He was subsequently arrested and remained in custody until his sentencing on March 29, 2021.

After pleading guilty to that stabbing, Roy received an additional seven months and 24 days in prison, two years of probation and a 10-year firearms ban.

According to the provincial court database, Roy has other prior convictions for assault with a weapon, break-and-enter, robbery, possession of stolen property, resisting a peace officer, assault causing bodily harm, and several counts of breaching his conditions.
