Man dies after coming into contact with unknown blue substance

Incident occured at ‘problem residence’ in Abbotsford

A man in his 60s died after coming into contact with an unknown blue substance in Abbotsford Monday.

The man was one of three occupants in a Bradner Road home, when B.C. Emergency Health Services crews responded to a medical call at 12:20 p.m. Monday. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service crews were called in to deal with an unidentified hazardous material, assistant fire chief Craig Leighton said.

It took nearly five hours to decontaminate the scene and people, Leighton said. When the man in his 60s left the scene, he was in full cardiac arrest. Another individual was decontaminated and treated on scene, Leighton said.

The substance, described as “some kind of chemical, blue in nature,” has been seized by police and sent for testing.

Const. Ian MacDonald of the Abbotsford Police said the substance has been sent for testing. He said the Bradner home near Simpson Road is “historically a problem residence.”
