A man who was wanted in connection with a violent kidnapping in Mission in January of this year has now been arrested and charged.

David James Brown of Port Coquitlam was arrested July 28 by Mission RCMP after fleeing from them in a vehicle.

Upon his arrest, police allegedly located a loaded handgun in the driver’s side door of the vehicle.

The assault for which Brown, 25, was wanted took place on Jan. 13. On that day, police responded to a report of an injured man wandering in the area of Bear Mountain – a remote location off of Richards Avenue.

The man was transported by ambulance to hospital for the treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police determined that the victim had been kidnapped by two men who took him to that remote location, where he was robbed and assaulted.

One of the accused, Michael Jared Johnson, 24, was arrested Jan. 22. He was charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, and assault causing bodily harm.

Mission RCMP issued a public notice in April, asking for help in confirming the identity of the other suspect.

Information from the public confirmed that the man was Brown, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Brown remains in custody and has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, and kidnapping. He is next scheduled to appear Aug. 17 in Abbotsford provincial court.

Police also arrested the passenger of the vehicle, 24-year-old Christopher Sharpe, on charges of breaching his bail conditions and possessing a prohibited weapon.

He also remains in custody.

Johnson was released from custody after his January arrest but was back in prison again in May following an unrelated assault that had occurred in March.

In that incident, he and two others allegedly assaulted a 25-year-old Abbotsford man and a 33-year-old Mission man in the 33800 block of Dlugosh Avenue in Mission.

Police at the time said the assailants had used a crowbar and possibly an axe to assault the two men.

Johnson was charged in that incident with aggravated assault, robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, and failing to comply with his bail conditions.

He has been remanded in custody until his trial date of Oct. 11 in Abbotsford.
