A 31-year-old man was airlifted to hospital early Saturday morning after his vehicle went off the road and hit a tree.

Abbotsford Police, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and BC Ambulance were called just after 1 a.m. when a security guard on Bradner Road heard the crash north of Huntingdon Road.

Crews who arrived on the scene discovered that a newer model SUV had crashed where there was a bend in the road.

The driver was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to hospital, accompanied by a police officer. He suffered head and chest injuries, according to police.

Traffic in the area was shut down for several hours between King and Huntingdon roads.

Const. Ian MacDonald said police are continuing to investigate whether the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.
