The CFL champion Lions are taking their hallowed trophy on a tour of B.C., and Abbotsford was on the first day’s itinerary on Sunday. The trip started in Coquitlam, and Sunday night was at Finnegan’s Pub for a KidSport fundraiser that garnered $500.
A pair of award-winning players are traveling with the cup: quarterback Travis Lulay, winner of the CFL’s most outstanding player award last season; and kicker Paul McCallum, who set a new mark for field goal accuracy last season at 94.34 per cent. Former centre Jamie Taras is also on the trip, now working in a public relations capacity for the Lions.
They talked to the kids about their losing 0-5 start to last season, and how perseverance and sticking together as a team made them champions. Then they posed with the cup for photos with the crowd at the assembly, and with the Hansen football players, and signed souvenir footballs.
Head coach Paul Gill said he has players who aspire to college and even pro football careers, and it is inspiring for them to see star players and the Grey Cup “right in front of them.”
The tour will move onto Victoria and several Vancouver Island communities, hit Interior cities including Kelowna, Kamloops and Prince George and return to Langley by Sunday after an 18-city trek.
