RCMP detachments across the province, including Mission, will conduct a one-day “light up the bridges” enforcement blitz to kick off the first weekend of ICBC’s summer impaired driving campaign.
Police will be setting up CounterAttack roadchecks near various bridges to get impaired drivers off the roads.
Tonight (July 3) Mission RCMP will be at the Mission Bridge, checking cars for any impaired drivers.
“If your summer activities involve alcohol, plan ahead for a safe ride home,” said Don Miller, ICBC’s road safety coordinatior for Mission and Abbotsford.
“Arrange a designated driver, call a taxi or take transit. Share the responsibility of being the designated river this summer to help your friends and family get home safely.”
Impaired driving remains a top contributing factor for fatal car crashes in B.C.
Here are some sobering facts:
On average, 86 people die every year in crashes involving impaired drivers.
During the summer months, on average, 42 people in B.C. are killed in impaired-related crashes.
Impairment is still the leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C.
Most impaired-related crashes (59 per cent) occur on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Males account for 71 per cent of all impaired drivers in crashes.
