Police are reminding supervisors of young drivers to pay attention to their charges after busting a learner driver going more than 50 kilometres over the speed limit.

Const. Ian MacDonald said that on March 31 around 9:30 p.m., a police officer pulled over a vehicle that was going 133 km/h on Highway 11 near Clayburn Road, where the speed limit is 80 km/h. The officer approached and discovered that the driver was a teenage girl who had only a learner’s permit, and that both the father and mother of the driver were passengers.

The driver was ticketed and the vehicle impounded. A letter was also sent to the superintendent of motor vehicles that could have a bearing on the driver’s licence. MacDonald said there are no penalties that could be imposed on the parents, and it’s unclear whether the parents were being willfully blind or actually just not paying attention to the road. He said police can only hope they’ll better supervise their daughter in the future when she’s behind the wheel.

“Most young people make good choices. This one didn’t and they were not aided in any way, shape or form by parental guidance.”
