The District of Kent could soon be home to a small cannabis cultivator.

District Council will host a public hearing before their regular meeting on Dec. 13 to discuss a new bylaw, which would allow properties within the agricultural land reserve to alllow for certain cannabis operations within the district.

The yet-to-be-adopted bylaw would specifically allow for a non-soil-based federally-licenced micro-cannabis cultivation facility and processing facility. Councillors have read the bylaw twice during a public meeting on Nov. 22 before their regular council meeting. At the time, there were no comments submitted by the public in person or online, positive or negative.

Cannabis has been a topic of council discussion in the District of Kent for several years, recently ramping up since 2019. Public feedback of the idea at the time was mixed, with the main area of concern being that cannabis operations and retailers were not built close to schools or daycares. The current bylaw says retail operations are not to be within 125 metres of a school or 200 metres of a child care centre, limited to one site in the District of Kent.

Early last year, the council voted unanimously to allow for private or government-owned cannabis store to set up shop within the district; this ammended previous wording did not include potential for a private operation to set up shop.

The District of Kent public meeting to discuss the new bylaw starts at 7 p.m. at Municipal Hall in Agassiz. Online attendance is available via Microsoft Teams with registration through kentbc.ca. Questions can be emailed to mlbeaulieu@kentbc.ca or mailed to Director of Development Services, District of Kent, P.O. Box 70, Agassiz, B.C. V0M 1A0.
