Impaired driver stops car in traffic to have a nap

Witnesses take two young boys out of the car, and Abbotsford Police impound the man's vehicle

A driver heading north on Trethewey Street on Wednesday at about 12:30 p.m. moved into the lane to make a left turn on South Fraser Way, but the vehicle didn’t move when the light turned green.

Instead, the 48-year-old man lay back to have a nap, said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald.

He said the most concerning thing to witnesses was that the man had two young boys – ages seven and eight – in the back seat. One of the boys was later discovered to be his son, and the other was a neighbour’s.

The bystanders removed the boys from the car while they waited for police to arrive, and then saw the driver move into the back seat as if to get more comfortable, MacDonald said.

Police who arrived on the scene suspected the man was impaired and conducted a roadside screening test.

The man’s vehicle was impounded for 90 days and he will be required to have a breathalyzer immobilizer device in his vehicle when it is back in his possession.
