An impaired driver had their child blow into the breathalyzer system on their car so that they could drive it on Wednesday night (June 14) in Abbotsford, police say.

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) said patrol officers stopped an unlicensed driver, who they discovered was also impaired.

“During the stop, the driver admitted to members that they made their child blow into the ignition interlock system installed in the vehicle,” police said.

An ignition interlock is a device wired to a vehicle’s ignition to which a driver must provide an alcohol-free breath sample to start the vehicle.

The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, the vehicle was impounded, and police contacted the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
