Langley RCMP quickly took a car thief into custody after he crashed into a dump truck at high speed Wednesday evening.

The Toyota Corolla had been stolen just minutes earlier when a man in his early 30s had accosted a woman and taken her car keys from her.

The victim had parked her car at the corner of 272 St. and Fraser Hwy. when the thief grabbed her keys from her hand shortly after 6 p.m.

Sgt. Ravinder Pawar said police were already headed to the scene on another call regarding an attempted theft of a truck at 273 St. and Fraser Hwy., and received word of the stolen Toyota while en route.

The responding officers witnessed the stolen Toyota headed the other direction at a very high rate of speed, westbound on Fraser Hwy., and saw it hit a dump truck that was in the intersection of 264 St. and Fraser Hwy.

The officers were able to cuff the suspect at the crash scene and took him into custody.

The car theft suspect was uninjured.

Sgt. Pawar said the suspect was also found to be under the influence of alcohol, and said he is known to police.

"The victim was quite shaken and our Victim Services Unit was made available to her," said Sgt. Pawar.

However, police would like to speak to the person who made the initial call regarding the attempted theft of a truck, as that person had left the scene before police arrived.
