Independent Investigations Office looking into incident from March 6 in 3700 block of Davie Street

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating an arrest in Abbotsford in which a man suffered serious dog bites.

In a press release issued Tuesday (April 20), the IIO said the incident took place at about 8 p.m. on March 6. At that time as part of an ongoing investigation, Abbotsford Police officers were arresting a man in the 3700 block of Davie Street with the assistance of a police service dog.

The man was bitten by the dog and taken to hospital for treatment, the IIO said.

The agency said it was notified about the incident on April 12. No further details were released.

The IIO is asking anyone with pertinent information to contact the witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or fill out the contact form online at iiobc.ca.

In February, the IIO announced that it had forwarded a report to the BC Prosecution Service to consider charges involving another dog-bite incident in Abbotsford.

That incident took place in July 2020, when the RCMP’s Integrated Police Dog Service unit was called to assist the Abbotsford Police Department with the arrest of a man who had barricaded himself with a child in a residence in the 2000 block of Center Street. The man suffered serious injuries from dog bites.

That matter is still with the Prosecution Service.

The IIO is an independent civilian agency that investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
