Homicide investigation underway after man found lying on road

Investigators are on Lonzo Road west of Sumas Way for the suspicious death of a man believed to be in his 30s.

A homicide investigation is underway in Abbotsford after a man who was found severely injured on Sunday night died at the scene.

Const. Ian MacDonald said Abbotsford Police were called at 11:08 p.m. by a driver who saw a man lying in the street on Lonzo.Road west of Sumas Way.

Police, BC Ambulance and Abbotsford Fire Rescue crews arrived on the scene and attempted to render assistance, but the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:25 p.m.

APD major crime detectives and forensic identification unit officers were called out, and the investigation is being transitioned to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

The victim is a Caucasian man believed to be in his 30s.

At this point, police don’t know what caused the man’s injuries, but it is not believed that he injured himself or fell.

Investigators were still on the scene on Monday morning, and a white tent covered the area where the man's body was found on the north side of Lonzo Road just before it rounds the corner and turns into Vedder Way.

Across from the tented area, investigators were looking through a homeless camp (photo below) located under the Highway 1 overpass. That area has also been taped off.

MacDonald said police will be reviewing surveillance video from businesses in the area as part of the investigation.
