The sky over Abbotsford was dark Sunday after winds prompted the cancelation of the annual Canada Day fireworks show.

Wind at high elevations prompted the cancellation of the City of Abbotsford’s annual fireworks show Sunday evening.

It was the first cancellation in more than a dozen years at Rotary Stadium.

After numerous test shots, and exploring other options, such as removing some effects of the show, it was concluded that it was impossible to fire the show safely, as debris from the fireworks was landing outside the safety zone,” the city said in a Facebook post Tuesday.

“We waited until the last possible moment to cancel the show, as we were hoping that the wind would die down after sunset. This is usually the case with this fireworks site; however, the wind would not let up.”

The city won’t have to pay for the unused fireworks, which will be retrained by the contractor, Celebration Fireworks. A spokesperson said its uncertain whether they will be able to use them again.
