Environment Canada is warning Fraser Valley residents about a heat wave expected to hit this week.
Temperatures are expected to hit the low thirties, with Thursday expected to be the hottest.
Inland areas will be the warmest, reaching 32 C or higher and areas close to water will be cooler, around 25 C.
While the weather is predicted to cool down by a couple degrees on Friday and through the weekend, above-average temperatures are expected to carry into next week.
Environment Canada advised the public to be aware of the health risks of staying out in the sun.
“There are many symptoms of heat-related illness, including thirst, dizziness, confusion, weakness and fainting/collapsing,” a statement reads. “Medical health officers are reminding residents to protect themselves from the heat.”
The statement also suggests you spend time in an air-conditioned place, stay in the shade and use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more to avoid sunburn.
It is also advised to drink cool, non-alcoholic beverages.
“Don’t wait until you are thirsty,” the statement says.
Checking in on people who live alone and are at high risk of severe heat-related illness (the elderly, people with mental illness and anyone unable to leave an non air-conditioned home).
The statement warns against leaving children and pets in parked cars: “Temperatures can rise to dangerous levels within minutes in an enclosed vehicle when the outside temperatures are elevated. Leaving the car windows slightly open or ‘cracked’ will not keep the inside of the vehicle at a safe temperature.”
