Harm reduction debate will continue

Abbotsford to host public consultation meetings in conjunction with Fraser health and ervice providers.

The public, special service groups and Fraser Health will all be part of the harm reduction debate in Abbotsford.

Council has instructed staff to prepare two public consultation meetings that would include input from service providers and Fraser Health, to look at all aspects of the harm reduction and needle exchange issues.

Currently, the city has a bylaw which bans needle exchanges, which Fraser Health would like to see changed.

Monday's decision is a reversal of what was approved back in June. Originally, council put aside a staff recommendation to consult with Fraser Health and service providers in favour of going straight to the public to gauge if there was an appetite to change the bylaw.

But Mayor Bruce Banman served notice that the decision would be revisited.
