A new cancer care initiative will soon be unveiled at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital that combines nutrition, exercise and emotional support with standard treatments.

Minister of Health and Abbotsford West MLA Michael de Jong recently announced funding for the local expansion of the InspireHealth program, which has been operating in Vancouver since 1997.

It will be rolling out in three other cities, including Victoria, Kelowna and Prince George, as part of Healthy Families BC.

The initiative aims at improving cancer care delivery and teaching patients how to support their own health and recovery.

Some of the programs include cooking classes, yoga and stress reduction courses.

InspireHealth will be phased in this September and is expected to be fully functional by next September.

The Ministry of Health is providing $2.5 million in start-up funding.

Another $2.5 million from the Provincial Health Services Authority will provide up to 12 additional medical doctors.
