Four Mission RCMP officers injured after suspected stolen vehicle rams blockade

A suspect has been placed into custody after a search through a Mission field

Four Mission RCMP officers were injured and three vehicles damaged when a car rammed into a blockade on Tuesday night.

Const. James Mason of the Mission RCMP detachment said all the officers received minor injuries.

“Last night (Tuesday) we responded to a report of a stolen vehicle that was heading from Maple Ridge towards Mission,” he explained.

An initial traffic stop was conducted in the Silverdale area, and the driver responded by fleeing the area in the vehicle.

Police began to set up a secondary traffic stop on the Lougheed Highway – between Chester Street and Nelson Street – when the vehicle approached.

“The vehicle rammed into our stationary police vehicles,” Mason said.

The suspect vehicle came to a stop in a ditch.

“He ended up fleeing on foot from the vehicle into a nearby field and then a wooded area.”

Additional resources were called in, resulting in about a dozen police cars being on scene, some in the field in an attempt to locate the suspect.

Mason said he was eventually located by the LMD police dog services and taken into custody.

“He’s known to us and is still in custody as the investigation is ongoing.”

Mason said the injured officers are expected to recover in the next few days.

“Due to the heavy volume of traffic, there are expected to be several witnesses to this incident. We are pleased that no one from the public was injured as a result of the actions of the driver. Police are encouraging anyone who may have information or recordings that might assist in the investigation to call the Mission RCMP major crimes unit, who has conduct of this investigation,” said Mason.
