Abbotsford West BC Liberal candidate Mike de Jong says University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) will receive 40 new spaces science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by 2022, if his party wins next Tuesday’s election.

The seats would be part of a plan to create 1,000 new such spots around the province, de Jong said Wednesday.

“These seats will help students in the Fraser Valley train for careers in tech-related businesses, while staying close to home,” de Jong said in a news release.

On top of creating 1,000 new STEM seats around the province by 2022, the Liberals have pledged to create another 1,000 seats once the students from the first 1,000 begin graduating.

B.C’s tech sector employs more than 106,000 British Columbians, and contributed $14.1 billion to the province’s overall economic output in 2015.
