Two former local mayors, George Ferguson and Dave Kandal, have signed the nomination papers of Coun. Henry Braun, who is making a bid for the Abbotsford mayor’s seat this fall.

In 1995, Ferguson and Kandal were involved in the successful amalgamation of the District of Abbotsford and the Distract of Matsqui to form the City of Abbotsford.

“George and I share many of the same values: open and transparent government and fiscal accountability,” Braun stated. “George is someone who believes we are servants of the people, not masters of the people – a view I also hold.”

Ferguson’s career in local politics started in 1969. He served until 2008, missing three years due to his one and only political defeat in nearly 40 years of public service. In 2011, he was honoured with the Order of Abbotsford and as Abbotsford’s Citizen of the Year.

Kandal was the final mayor of the former District of Matsqui and gave way to Ferguson in the first election of the newly amalgamated City of Abbotsford in 1995. Kandal was inducted into the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame for his commitment to recreational development, including an elementary school’s basketball league and many athletic facilities in the former District of Mastqui.
