The final two sections of Abbotsford’s Discovery Trail were officially opened on Tuesday.

Abbotsford MLAs Mike de Jong and John van Dongen joined Mayor Bruce Banman and other guests in Bateman Park on Bateman Road to mark the completion of the 30-km-plus pathway.

Banman said with obesity being pandemic, anything governments can do to encourage people to exercise will ultimately pay dividends in reduced health care costs.

Discovery Trail is a paved, three-metre-wide, all-season corridor that connects the east and west borders of the community.

The trail began construction in 2008.

Partnered with the province and local businesses, the city’s portion of the four-year project was approximately $3.7 million. More information on the Discovery Trail project can be found at www.abbotsford.ca/discoverytrail.
