Evacuation orders and alerts issued for properties on Sumas Mountain in Abbotsford

Residents of two properties ordered to leave with five others put on standby

Two properties have been issued evacuation orders and five more received evacuation notices due to unstable slopes threatening Lower Sumas Mountain Road in Abbotsford late Tuesday.

The City of Abbotsford issued the evacuation order for 36650 Lower Sumas Mountain Rd. and 36598 Florence Rd., and evacuation alerts for 36352 Lower Sumas Mountain Rd., 3056 Sumas Mountain Rd., and 36598, 36545 and 33664 Florence Dr.

Residents were told to leave the area immediately and follow the travel route provided, then register at the Emergency Support Services reception centre at the Tradex building at 1190 Cornell St.

The orders and alerts are just the latest since a series of atmospheric rivers rocked the Fraser Valley, hitting Abbotsford particularly hard.

Earlier this week, a number of homes on the Sumas Mountain slopes were also evacuated due to a mudslide that came with mere metres of hitting homes in the Whatcom Road area.
