A light aircraft spews sparks as it slides down the Abbotsford Airport runway after its landing gear failed to deploy properly.

A small aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at the Abbotsford Airport on Friday afternoon.

At approximately 4 p.m. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and two ambulances were called to the airport in preparation for the landing.

Ass. Fire Chief Ron Hull said the plane had a mechanical issue with its landing gear.

The plane approached the runway with its landing gear only partially down. The pilot made a "belly landing" and skidded across the tarmac, spewing sparks.

The plane slowed, turned slightly to the left and came to a stop.

The pilot immediately jumped from the aircraft, and ran away from the scene as emergency crews rushed in to ensure a fire did not ignite.

Hull said the pilot was the only person in the plane and sustained no injuries.
