As every foody’s calendar shows, it’s time for EAT!

The annual EAT! Fraser Valley returns to Tradex this weekend.

The Citytv Master Chef Competition will be presented for the first time at this year’s EAT! Fraser Valley.

The event has been popular at the Vancouver food festival, and this year 17 chefs will compete head-to-head before Abbotsford audiences. They will be given a box of food ingredients, and must use their creativity to devise a main course using only the contents, and in only 35 minutes. They will be judged by a panel of chefs from the B.C. Chefs Association.

Bite of the Valley is a large pavilion where some of the Valley’s finest restaurants offer samples of cuisine in appetizer-sized portions, costing $1 to $4 per sample. Foodies can talk to the chefs and ask questions of the experts.

Wineries, breweries and restaurants also offer samples of adult beverages, again for a maximum price of $4. Yellow Tail Wines, Dead Frog Brewing and Eldorado Rum are just a few of the participants in 2011. Visitors buy 50 cent bite/taste tickets, and “pay” for their samples with them.

There will also be stage demonstations featuring celebrity chefs Rob Feenie, Chuck Hughes and Galloping Gourmet Graham Kerr.  There will be free samples and numerous vendors with food and kitchen products on sale.

The event runs Friday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $12 adults, $10 seniors and $6 children. A $2 discount will be applied for adults and seniors if bought online.
