Police say a driver is lucky to be alive after crashing into a concrete building in Abbotsford this morning (Sunday).

The incident took place at about 8 a.m. in the area of Marshall Road and Marshall Place in west Abbotsford. It appears the driver hit a curb, and his van flew about 25 feet before crashing into the building.

The van ended up on its side and was so crushed that the roof was touching the steering wheel.

When fire crews arrived, they discovered that the driver – the vehicle’s only occupant – had freed himself by kicking out the front window.

Abbotsford Police Sgt. Marcus Senft said police have begun an impaired driving investigation.

“This individual is very lucky to be alive today, based on the significant damage to the vehicle,” he said.

The driver was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
