Details still being finalized on how to help couple

The home of Bill and Ann Connor of Abbotsford was destroyed by fire on Remembrance Day.

Details are still being finalized about how the public can help an elderly Abbotsford couple whose home was destroyed by fire on Remembrance Day.

Representatives from Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, Open Door Church and Habitat for Humanity met earlier this week to discuss the matter.

They meet again on Monday, and details should be more clear after that regarding the family’s needs and how the public can help.

In the meantime, friends of Bill and Ann Connor have opened a trust fund for cash donations. Deposits can be made at any branch of TD Canada Trust under account #9035-6371813.

The Connors’ home on Downes Road was destroyed by a chimney fire on Nov. 11, and they did not have insurance.

Alternative temporary accommodation for the couple has been arranged through emergency support services.

Inspections of their home have not yet determined whether the residence can be renovated or whether it must be demolished. Those details are also expected to be available early next week.

Several members of the public have called the Abbotsford News wanting to donate cash, furniture and clothing to the Connors, or to volunteer their time in rebuilding their home.
