Daytime temperatures across the Fraser Valley are expected to climb to high 30s and stay there.

‘Dangerous long duration heat wave’ settling into the Fraser Valley

Heat warning for weekend ‘little relief at night’ coming with overnight temps still elevated

It’s going to be so sweltering hot Environment Canada has put out a warning for most of the Fraser Valley due to the “dangerous long duration” heat wave about to settle in this weekend.

The heat warning for Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Agassiz/Harrison, and Hope points to an “exceptionally strong ridge of high pressure” that’s to blame for the heat records that are likely to be broken between Friday, June 25 and Tuesday June 29.

Daytime highs from 34 to 38 degrees Celsius can be expected, with overnight lows only dipping to 18 to 20 C.

Humidex will reach the high 30s or possibly low 40s.

“The duration of this heat wave is concerning as there is little relief at night with elevated overnight temperatures,” according to the June 24 release.

This severe heat spell could cause heat-related illnesses in some people.

Environment Canada and local Medical Health Officers expect an increase in health and safety risks from heat and are advising the public to take precautions.

• Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.

• Check on older family, friends and neighbours

• Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

• Watch for heat illness symptoms: dizziness/fainting; nausea/vomiting; rapid breathing and heartbeat; extreme thirst; decreased urination with unusually dark urine.
