Construction on Abbotsford’s new $150 million courthouse is set to ramp up, with an official groundbreaking ceremony set for this afternoon.

Abbotsford’s current courthouse is out of date, infested by vermin, and plagued by serious “functional, overcrowding, security and safety issues,” according to a 2014 report.

The new facility will be located just east of the Clearbrook Library and include 14 courtrooms, including those to hear Supreme Court cases. Currently, the nearest Supreme Court facilities to Abbotsford are in Chilliwack and New Westminster.

The new courthouse was announced last February by the BC Liberal government.

NDP Attorney General David Eby will be on hand Wednesday to officially break the ground at the site.
