The City of Abbotsford will remain a part of the Fraser Valley Regional District.
Council has approved a staff recommendation that Abbotsford abandon its pursuit regarding alternate governance options.
Early in 2011, council and then-Mayor George Peary directed city staff to examine the financial implications of leaving the district.
It was believed that the move would save taxpayers as much as $750,000 annually. In 2010, Abbotsford contributed approximately $3 million to the district.
Last year, the FVRD performed some corporate restructuring and re-examined its fee structure, resulting in savings of about $600,000 for this city.
In July 2012, Abbotsford Mayor Banman convened a forum to discuss the concept of a new regional district. The meeting included mayors from the Township of Langley, City of Langley, District of Mission, and the City of Chilliwack and the chair of the FVRD.
At that meeting a consensus was reached that it was premature to consider a separate regional district of the Central Fraser Valley.
Banman said the concept of regional transit and regional solid waste are being investigated at a staff level to determine if there are benefits in consolidating the two areas.
The City of Abbotsford is the largest member of the FVRD, which currently consists of six municipalities and seven electoral areas in the Fraser Valley.
