The City of Abbotsford says it is reducing services at Matsqui and Abbotsford recreation centres and cancelling all gatherings booked at city facilities.
The announcement comes in the walk of new provincial health orders announced on Tuesday (Dec. 21).
Swimming pools will remain open, and the city said it is awaiting further clarification on how the public health order affects drop-in sports, recreation classes, and children and youth programming.
Fitness centres at the recreation centres will be closed as of the end of the day Wednesday (Dec. 22) until Jan. 18.
Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced Tuesday that, due to a surge in Omicron cases, the new restrictions were being imposed.

Bars, nightclubs, fitness centres and dance studios must close. Restaurants are reduced to six people were table, and indoor organized gatherings (such as wedding receptions) are banned.
Large seated events such as concerts, movies and sports are reduced to 50 per cent capacity.
The province announced last Friday (Dec. 17) that sports tournaments and New Year’s Eve parties were banned, and that private holidays gatherings were limited to one household plus 10 people or two households.
The City of Abbotsford said it will continue to closely monitor pandemic-related guidelines, and updates will be provided on their website (abbotsford.ca) and social media channels.
