The City of Abbotsford is advising local residents to keep their storm drains clear in preparation for heavy rainfall and higher temperatures expected this weekend,

A post on the city website indicates that the River Forecast Centre has issued a “high streamflow advisory” following the snow and freezing rain on Friday (Dec. 23). Temperatures are expected to rise on Saturday to a high of 7 degrees, which will continue through Sunday and Monday.

“The storm cycle is anticipated to have the potential to bring high streamflow and potential for local flooding,” the post states.

“People are asked to stay away from rising rivers, ensure their storm drains near their house are clear and free of debris, and clear eavestroughs.”

The city says crews have been busy around the clock to clear priority roads and clear where they can, but it is also asking residents to clear the neighbourhood catch basins of snow and ice.

A clogged basin can be reported through the city app or by reporting online at abbotsford.ca/report-issue.

Curbside collection is continuing on a revised schedule; visit abbotsford.ca/collection-schedule for updates. Crews will be working on Saturday to catch up, the city says.
