Christmas Day power outages strike Abbotsford

Thousands of homes were left without power in Abbotsford and Mission on Christmas Day.

About 4,500 homes in Abbotsford and Mission were without power on Christmas Day due to a powerful windstorm.

The outages occurred between noon and 1 p.m. The biggest outage affected more than 3,600 homes in the area south of Prior Avenue, north of Highway 1, east of Babich Street and west of Empress Drive in Abbotsford.

According to BC Hydro, power was restored in that area by 4:30 p.m., but the longest outage lasted 11 hours – from 1 p.m. to just after midnight – to almost 230 homes on Sumas Mountain.

Winds reached gusts of between 70 and 90 km/h. Environment Canada said the storm was caused by an intense cold front moving into the region.
