Numerous emergency personnel were on the scene of a multi-person stabbing in Abbotsford on Saturday night.

Charges have been laid in relation to the stabbing of four people in Abbotsford on Saturday.

William Anton Butz (in photo below), 34, has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said Butz is the former boyfriend of the 18-year-old woman seriously wounded in the attack.

She is in stable condition and is recovering in hospital, while the three other victims – a 37-year-old woman and two men, ages 19 and 35 – have been released from hospital.

The four victims were among a small group of people gathered in a basement suite in the 31400 block of Springhill Court.

An altercation took place, and several people were stabbed. People from the suite began fleeing the scene, and passersby called police at about 8:40 p.m. to report that a man was stabbing people.

Three of the victims were taken to hospital by ground ambulance, while the 18-year-old was taken by air ambulance.

Butz was arrested that night in the basement suite.

One of the victims, who posted on Facebook, said that one of the female victims at the scene was stabbed in the eye, while the other had her throat slit.

The man said he required 50 stitches to close a wound on his arm.

MacDonald said the reasons for the attack are still not clear, and police are continuing to investigate.

According to the provincial court database, Butz has a long criminal record, running from 1998 to 2011 in Kelowna and Westbank, and 2013 and 2014 in Abbotsford.

His prior convictions include assaulting a peace officer, possession of stolen property, theft, assault, breaching his probation, break and enter, mischief, escaping from lawful custody, and possession of a controlled substance.

Butz, who also goes by the alias William Anthony Anderson, is next scheduled to appear Aug. 5 in Abbotsford provincial court on the aggravated assault charges.
