From ballads to lively Irish songs, love tunes to humour, the audience was taken on an uplifting voyage on Tuesday night.
Celtic Thunder wowed the crowd of about 3,500 dedicated fans at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre as the Voyage tour came to town.
The group of male Irish and Scottish singers and their band mesmerized the crowd with a combination of solo and ensemble performances.
Celtic Thunder obviously has a dedicated following as busloads of people arrived at the AESC. The mostly older crowd knew all of the production numbers as soon as the music began, with many singing and clapping along.
Casual fans may recognize the group's style as their concerts are frequently featured on public television.
Like other Celtic Thunder shows, Voyage has a feel of mysticism about it as the group uses dramatic lighting effects combined with a dark, misty stage decorated with rocks that gives the impression of an ancient stone pathway.
But the key element to the show are the voices. The men of Celtic Thunder each bring a different quality to the musical showcase and any one of them could likely enjoy success on the Broadway stage or as a soloist.
But that doesn't mean Tuesday's performance was without flaws.
Cast members made several references to this being their 62nd show on a tour that is nearing completion, and that fact showed in some of the musical numbers. It appears to be a “tired show” with the energy level lacking at times and the choreography static, as if it's been repeated 61 times before.
Still, overall it was a pleasant evening of entertainment and fans loved every minute
