A celebration of life has been scheduled for a retired Abbotsford Police sergeant who was killed in a car crash in Nanaimo in December.

The 22-year-old male driver of the Ford and his adult female passenger suffered minor injuries that did not require hospitalization.

At the time of the crash, police said they did not believe that alcohol or speed were contributing factors, but weather and road conditions had not been ruled out.

No further information has since been released.

Kirk began his policing career with the Vancouver Police Department in 1981 before joining the Abbotsford Police Department in 1990.

He became the department’s media relations officer in 2000, and later was promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Kirk later became the media spokesperson for the RCMP Integrated Gang Task Force and then the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit.

He retired in 2012 and, at the time of his passing, worked for the Abbotsford Police Department’s commissionaires, who provide services that include guarding jail cells and providing inventory control.

Kirk’s family is also planning a traditional South Asian funeral service on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. at Delta’s Riverside Funeral Home, 7410 Hopcott Rd.

Temple services will follow at Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, 8600 No. 5 Rd. in Richmond.
