Canuck fan faces impaired driving charge in Abbotsford

The 42-year-old man was transporting eight teens, dressed in Canucks gear, along South Fraser Way when police pulled him over.

A playoff-hockey reveller in Abbotsford took his celebrations too far on Wednesday night and is now facing impaired-driving charges.

Const. Ian MacDonald said police pulled over a Ford Bronco at about 6 p.m. in the area of Ware Street and South Fraser Way.

The 42-year-old driver was transporting eight youths, aged 13 to 19, who were wearing Vancouver Canucks gear in celebration of the team's first playoff game against the L.A. Kings.

MacDonald said there were not enough seats or seatbelts for all the passengers, but an even bigger concern was that the driver appeared to be impaired.

He was taken to the police station, where he allegedly blew twice the legal limit, MacDonald said. His vehicle was impounded, resulting in all the teens having to find another ride home.

MacDonald reminded residents that, during the playoff run, police will be monitoring activities along South Fraser Way, where Canuck fans have traditionally gathered to celebrate wins.

"Public safety is always of paramount importance ... and this (driver) is not the type of fan we want coming out to celebrate."
