What was first reported as a shooting outside Chilliwack General Hospital Saturday turned out to be a stabbing victim crashing an SUV into a utility box.

At around 9 a.m. on Saturday, paramedics near the hospital came upon the scene on Mary Street, just south of Hodgins Avenue, according to BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS).

A shooting was reported over emergency scanners, but Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Rail said Monday that it was not a shooting.

“The occupant of the vehicle was suffering a stab wound to his arm and was driving to the hospital,” Rail said.

A crashed red SUV with airbags deployed was on the grass next to the emergency room parking lot. RCMP officers had a portion of Mary Street cordoned off with police tape as they investigated.

The patient, a 46-year-old male from Agassiz, was transferred to Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre in critical condition.

He reportedly suffered a serious but non-life-threatening injury.

Rail said the matter is still under investigation.
