Mission RCMP are trying to determine why a 38-year-old local man was in possession of a pipe bomb that ended up exploding in his hands.

"The man is lucky to be alive," said Mission RCMP Cpl. Sharon Siluch in a statement.

Mounties responded to a call of a pipe bomb explosion at an apartment complex at 12 Avenue around 10 p.m. Sunday, which caused serious injuries to the man's hand.

"Police have not been able to determine why he had a pipe bomb and where it came from, but we ask anyone with more information to come forward," said Siluch. "Not only could this have ended with tragic results, it is extremely alarming as to why this man had a pipe bomb in the first place."

The Explosives Disposal Unit was called in and no other bombs were located. It appears this was an isolated incident and there were no other reported injuries.

The incident is still under investigation and the victim, who is known to police, remains in the hospital after being airlifted from Mission Raceway.

Police are asking that anyone with information on this incident to please contact Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161 or Crimestoppers at 604-669-TIPS (8477).
