BCCDC: Case rates spike in Abbotsford, drop in Agassiz, Chilliwack’s remain worst

Vaccination rates increasing by percentage point per week across region

COVID case rates have spiked in Abbotsford, dropped in Agassiz/Harrison, but Chilliwack remains the most infectious city in the eastern Fraser Valley and the Lower Mainland.

From Oct. 12 to 18, only five daily cases per 100,000 were recorded in Agassiz/Harrison, a significant drop from 17 recorded last week. Abbotsford’s rate is at 29 per 100,000, spiking from 21 last week.

The other municipalities’ rates remain elevated, but show a slight decrease from last week. Chilliwack’s daily rate went from 34 per 100,000 to 31, Hope went from 33 to 29, and Mission went from 21 to 18.

Vaccination rates remain on a steady increase across the region, creeping up by a percentage point per week.

As of Oct. 18, 87 per cent of eligible Abbotsford residents have received their first dose (fully vaccinated: 80 per cent), compared to 83 per cent in Agassiz/Harrison (80), 80 per cent in both Chilliwack and Mission (73), and 77 per cent in Hope (70).

Vaccine coverage across B.C. is at 89 per cent for the first dose, and 83 per cent for fully vaccinated.

Test positivity was highest in Hope at 12 per cent of public tests, followed by Abbotsford at 11 per cent, Chilliwack at nine per cent, and Mission at 7 per cent. Agassiz was the only area below the B.C. average of 6 per cent.

From Oct. 6 to 12, unvaccinated accounted for 68 per cent of new cases, and 80 per cent of hospitalizations.

Over the last month, data shows that the unvaccinated are nine times more likely to become infected, 40 times more likely to be hospitalized and 41 times more likely to die.

Case rates are currently stable in the Fraser Health area.
