Approximately 1,300 students came out to the annual Arbour Day celebration held at Mill Lake Park today (May 10).

Hosted by the City of Abbotsford's parks recreation and culture department, the day-long event featured an official tree planting, trail tours and plenty of interactive displays and activities.

One of the displays featured a product called an air spade, which loosens soil around a tree.

"It was neat for the kids to see exposed roots from a live tree," said Eric Fong, organizer of the event.

The event is designed to raise awareness of the environment and teach children about trees and other aspects of nature.

"It was very successful. We had more than 100 volunteers, along with the exhibitors, to help out," said Fong.

Bucket rides were also available – for adults only – which lifted people up to 70 feet in the air to get a closer look at some of the higher trees. There was also a zip line for the more adventurous visitors.
